Energy Governance System (ERGOS) is a feasibility study developed with the company Emisfera located in Verbania and has the objective of evaluating indicators that can be identified to increase the efficiency of a dedicated plant for the production of electricity and the combined generation of electricity and heat, improving the maintenance processes.

The current scenario in the sector of energy production plants reveals there are not management solutions tailored to match the costs that asmall/medium size company can support. Furthermore, the use of performance indicators is not so prevalent even at the big companies that do not use frequently such possibility in the absence of a culture of data analysis and business intelligence applied to the operating segments.

The study identified:

- A model: describes a system through a schematic representation of technological components and representing functional aspects with appropriate physical parameters and engineering.

- General indicators: provide a framework for synthetic status of maintenance. An example is the ratio of expenditure to turnover, the allocation of maintenance expenses by type of expense (materials, people, others) or the ratio of expenditure on maintenance product;

- Indexes on maintenance policies: provide an overview with respect to the maintenance process. Refer to individual machines or equipment in order to optimize the action as a function of factors such as criticality, obsolescence and the seniority of the technical object;

- Indexes of effectiveness/ efficiency are intended to highlight the goodness of maintenance in terms of service. Es. Number of faults, hours of failure, measures of system availability, compliance with speed.

- Measures related to machine/ or critical components: possible to measure the parameters of the service.

- Indicators highlighted with non-trivial data mining techniques that can highlight non-trivial correlations.

The project therefore aims to provide a reusable template that promotes the optimal management of a plant for the production of electrical energy by addressing the needs of maintenance and give an estimate of the cost-effectiveness of the maintenance expressed by comparing the maintenance cost of the intervention and the reduction of the economic performance of the system.

The project identifies the maintenance parameters that lead to the definition of the Equipment Overall Efficiency indicators and which is directly related to a company’s ROI. OEE is a key performance indicator that measures machines, lines and production processes “work” in terms of availability, production rate and quality.
